What is European position on The Israel-Iran war?

European governments are giving Israel more leeway in its current war with Iran.

European governments’ position stems from their unwillingness to see a nuclear-armed regime in Iran. They also believe that the Iranian regime has long been a source of instability in the Middle East and a threat to Western interests. Furthermore, it is a close ally of Russia, supplying it with drones in its ongoing war against Ukraine.

Leaders of major European countries, meeting with their counterparts from the United States, Canada, and Japan at the recent G7 summit in Canada, agreed not to allow Iran to possess a nuclear weapon and signed a statement labeling it a source of terrorism in the Middle East.

However, these leaders are concerned about Israeli aggression and are trying to persuade the Donald Trump administration to rein in Benjamin Netanyahu’s government, fearing that the current conflict between Tel Aviv and Tehran could spiral out of control and escalate into a wider regional war.

The European vision for addressing the Iranian nuclear issue was based on a policy of tightening sanctions on the Islamic Republic regime, which would force it to accept a new agreement with the Americans.

In this regard, the Europeans are opening channels of communication with the Iranians via the Sultanate of Oman and some other regional countries, with the aim of bringing them back to the nuclear talks with Washington while simultaneously putting an end to the current Israeli-Iranian conflict. The prevailing view within the European Union remains that it does not oppose the weakening of the Iranian nuclear program by the Israelis.
