Eight months later he\u00a0dissolved\u00a0the parliament and then\u00a0fired 57 judges and prosecutors, accusing them of &#8220;financial&#8221; and &#8220;moral&#8221; corruption.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"6CvPUm29FM\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2023\/07\/tunisia-human-rights-at-risk-two-years-after-president-saieds-power-grab\/\">Tunisia: Human rights at risk two years after President Saied\u2019s power grab<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Tunisia: Human rights at risk two years after President Saied\u2019s power grab&#8221; &#8212; Amnesty International\" src=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2023\/07\/tunisia-human-rights-at-risk-two-years-after-president-saieds-power-grab\/embed\/#?secret=ljPRox1iIB#?secret=6CvPUm29FM\" data-secret=\"6CvPUm29FM\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\" dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Tunisia has tumbled 21 places on the Reporters Without Borders Freedom Index as\u00a0journalists report being interrogated by security forces and handed prison sentences.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\" dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">At least 39 people have been investigated on charges of &#8220;insulting authorities&#8221; and &#8220;spreading fake news,&#8221; Amnesty International has said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\" dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Political prisoners, state critics and perceived critics have been targeted, including 21 members of the country&#8217;s largest opposition party Ennahda.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\" dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Leader of Ennahda and former speaker of the now-dissolved parliament Rached Ghannouchi is being\u00a0investigated\u00a0for &#8220;conspiracy against the state.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\" dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">In April, Ennahda&#8217;s offices were raided by police who also closed the headquarters of the main opposition coalition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\" dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Earlier this year, Saied&#8217;s racist comments about black Africans triggered violence, discrimination and the\u00a0forced eviction of migrants out of the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\" dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Many were left on the Algerian or Libyan border with\u00a0no food and water. Some reported having suffered sexual violence, others were beaten and tortured by authorities.<\/p>\n<div id=\"v-QT6CM0ja-1\" class=\"video-player\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"VideoPress Video Player\" src=\"https:\/\/videopress.com\/embed\/QT6CM0ja?hd=1&amp;cover=1&amp;loop=0&amp;autoPlay=1&amp;permalink=0&amp;muted=0&amp;controls=1&amp;playsinline=0&amp;useAverageColor=0&amp;preloadContent=metadata\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" aria-label=\"VideoPress Video Player\" data-resize-to-parent=\"true\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\" dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Prior to Saied&#8217;s power grab Tunisia was considered an exception in the region that was heading towards democracy as its neighbours became engulfed in violence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\" dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Tunisia was known for having the freest press in the Arab World, but over the course of his rule, Saied has set about reversing any of these gains.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\" dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;Decree by decree, blow by blow, President Saied and his government have dramatically undermined respect for human rights in Tunisia since his power grab in July 2021,&#8221; said Amnesty&#8217;s MENA Director, Heba Morayef.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\" dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;In doing so, he has stripped away basic freedoms that Tunisians fought hard to earn and fostered a climate of repression and impunity.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\" dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;The Tunisian authorities must immediately cease their crackdown on human rights, which is steadily undoing the hard-won achievements of\u00a0the 2011 revolution.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Advocacy group Amnesty International said today that the Tunisian President Kais Saied&#8217;s two-year-long power grab has &#8220;dramatically undermined&#8221; human rights in the country.
