Let\u2019s pray\u00a0to\u00a0the Lord to give us the grace to overcome this madness of war, which is always a defeat,\u201d the Pope said during his weekly audience in St Peter\u2019s Square.<\/p>\n<p class=\"swift-in-viewport\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Also, on Wednesday, the Russian Embassy to the Holy See congratulated Francis on the 11th anniversary of his election, hailing him on X as a \u201ctrue and sincere advocat(e) of humanism, peace and traditional values\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"swift-in-viewport\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Francis is \u201cone of the few political leaders with a truly strategic viewpoint on world problems,\u201d the embassy said.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Slain soldier<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"swift-in-viewport\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Francis did not specifically mention Ukraine or any other war zones in his audience, but said he had earlier been given a set of rosary beads and a copy of the Gospels that had belonged to a man killed on an unspecified frontline.<\/p>\n<p class=\"swift-in-viewport\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Sister Lucia Caram, an Argentine nun who met the Pope before his appearance at St Peter\u2019s Square, wrote on social media that the man was a 23-year-old Ukrainian soldier who died in\u00a0Avdiivka, an eastern city captured by Russians last month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"swift-in-viewport\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The rosary had originally been blessed by the Pope, and Sister Caram returned them to the Pontiff, she said, adding that Francis kissed it and appeared moved as \u201che loves Ukraine and suffers for the martyrdom of this people invaded and cruelly attacked\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"swift-in-viewport\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Francis, who is 87 and hampered by mobility and respiratory issues,\u00a0limited his speaking\u00a0at the audience\u00a0for a third week in a row, leaving it to an aide to read most of his prepared texts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"swift-in-viewport\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">He told the faithful he still had \u201ca bit of a cold\u201d.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Pope Francis issued a fresh condemnation of all wars\u00a0on Wednesday, days after\u00a0irking Kyiv\u00a0and Western capitals\u00a0for\u00a0appearing\u00a0to suggest that Ukraine should surrender and negotiate peace with its Russian invader,\u00a0Reuters\u00a0reports.
