Unlimited American Support for Morocco’s National Cause: Statements by the American Ambassador Confound Algeria<\/strong><\/p>\n

U.S. Ambassador to Algeria Elizabeth Moore Aubin reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to its supportive stance on the Moroccan Sahara, sending a direct message to Algerian diplomacy. Washington remains steadfast in endorsing the autonomy plan under Moroccan sovereignty as the sole viable solution to the fabricated conflict over the Moroccan region.<\/p>\n

In an interview with the French-language newspaper “Parti News,” the American diplomat stated that “although President Joe Biden’s administration has taken a different direction, Washington has not changed its position on the Moroccan Sahara,” emphasizing “its support for the UN’s leadership in finding a lasting solution.”<\/p>\n

Aubin’s remarks were in response to a question about the tensions between Algeria and the United States in recent years due to Trump’s decision to recognize Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara. In December 2020, former U.S. President Donald Trump recognized Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara, marking the culmination of successful Moroccan diplomatic efforts, which unsettled Algerian diplomacy.<\/p>\n

The American ambassador said, “We are committed to enabling the UN Secretary-General and the team led by Staffan de Mistura to find a lasting solution that meets the expectations of the inhabitants of the Moroccan Sahara, and this is what we have been working on for three and a half years.”<\/p>\n

This is not the first time an American official has reiterated Washington’s rejection of separatist proposals under the guise of “the right to self-determination” advocated by Algeria in support of the Polisario Front. Aubin affirmed that “Washington considers the Moroccan autonomy plan as the feasible solution,” which is clear evidence of the United States’ unwavering support for the Moroccan initiative, which is backed by at least 100 countries.<\/p>\n

Previously, State Department spokesman Matthew Miller stated that “Washington continues to consider the autonomy plan for the Sahara as serious, credible, and realistic to end the fabricated conflict over the Moroccan Sahara.”<\/p>\n

Relations between Morocco and the United States are experiencing significant momentum, with both countries keen to enhance cooperation in various fields. Washington views Rabat as a reliable partner playing a crucial role in maintaining stability in a turbulent region.<\/p>\n

A recent report by the Washington Institute for Near East Policy urged the United States to further support Morocco in security and technology to address various challenges, emphasizing Rabat’s importance as a strategic partner in North Africa.<\/p>\n
