Mohamed Sahnoun, Bazoum\u2019s special advisor and member of the political bureau of <strong data-start=\"3559\" data-end=\"3575\">PNDS\u2013Tarayya<\/strong>, revealed in an exclusive interview with <em data-start=\"3617\" data-end=\"3638\">La Presse Marocaine<\/em> key insights into the ongoing crisis.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"3678\" data-end=\"3723\"><strong data-start=\"3682\" data-end=\"3723\">Secret Moroccan and Qatari Mediations<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"3725\" data-end=\"4232\">Sahnoun confirmed that <strong data-start=\"3748\" data-end=\"3809\">Morocco initiated a secret mediation since September 2023<\/strong>, led by the <strong data-start=\"3822\" data-end=\"3882\">General Directorate for Studies and Documentation (DGED)<\/strong> under Yassine Mansouri, including three delegations sent to Niamey to negotiate with the Military Council. Yet, <strong data-start=\"3995\" data-end=\"4051\">no tangible progress was achieved by the end of 2024<\/strong>. Qatar also attempted mediation, but both efforts failed, according to Sahnoun, due to the <strong data-start=\"4143\" data-end=\"4197\">obstruction by former President Issoufou Mahamadou<\/strong>, fearing Bazoum\u2019s return to power.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"4234\" data-end=\"4430\">\n<p data-start=\"4236\" data-end=\"4430\">\u201cBazoum is practically considered a <strong data-start=\"4272\" data-end=\"4286\">human pawn<\/strong> by his captors. Nothing justifies his detention in the presidential palace; he is a symbol of arbitrary detention and democracy,\u201d Sahnoun said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"4432\" data-end=\"4464\"><strong data-start=\"4436\" data-end=\"4464\">Detention and Conditions<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"4466\" data-end=\"4694\">President Bazoum is held in a <strong data-start=\"4496\" data-end=\"4513\">specific wing<\/strong> of the presidential palace, along with his wife Hadiza Bazoum, and only sees his doctor <strong data-start=\"4602\" data-end=\"4618\">twice a week<\/strong>. His phone was confiscated in October 2023, a measure unrelated to Morocco.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"4696\" data-end=\"4739\"><strong data-start=\"4700\" data-end=\"4739\">Economic and Security Deterioration<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"4741\" data-end=\"5153\">\n<li data-start=\"4741\" data-end=\"4895\">\n<p data-start=\"4743\" data-end=\"4895\"><strong data-start=\"4743\" data-end=\"4754\">Economy<\/strong>: The border closure with Benin has disrupted supplies, causing delays of <strong data-start=\"4828\" data-end=\"4852\">three to four months<\/strong>, worsening inflation and daily hardship.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"4896\" data-end=\"5153\">\n<p data-start=\"4898\" data-end=\"5153\"><strong data-start=\"4898\" data-end=\"4910\">Security<\/strong>: The army lost over <strong data-start=\"4931\" data-end=\"4962\">1,480 soldiers in two years<\/strong>, whereas during Bazoum\u2019s <strong data-start=\"4988\" data-end=\"5028\">two years and three months in office<\/strong>, only 57 soldiers died. Civilians face daily deadly attacks, and most regions are under terrorist threat, except for Zinder.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"5155\" data-end=\"5197\"><strong data-start=\"5159\" data-end=\"5197\">Popularity and Political Symbolism<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"5199\" data-end=\"5518\">Despite his detention, Bazoum remains <strong data-start=\"5237\" data-end=\"5258\">extremely popular<\/strong>, and Sahnoun believes that if free elections were held, <strong data-start=\"5315\" data-end=\"5350\">his victory would be inevitable<\/strong>. Bazoum is described as <strong data-start=\"5375\" data-end=\"5437\">the most honest and upright president Niger has ever known<\/strong>, while history will note Issoufou\u2019s attempt to undermine his successor\u2019s legacy.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"5520\" data-end=\"5565\"><strong data-start=\"5524\" data-end=\"5565\">Appeal to the International Community<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"5567\" data-end=\"5852\">Sahnoun urged the international community to use <strong data-start=\"5616\" data-end=\"5652\">all legitimate means of pressure<\/strong> to <strong data-start=\"5656\" data-end=\"5701\">secure the release of Bazoum and his wife<\/strong>, as well as <strong data-start=\"5714\" data-end=\"5741\">all political prisoners<\/strong>, warning that prolonging this crisis intensifies the suffering of the people and threatens national stability.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At a critical juncture in Niger\u2019s history, elected president Mohamed Bazoum is living his second year held captive in the presidential palace, reflecting an unprecedented political and security crisis.
