Yet no tangible measures followed\u2014no sanctions, no economic conditions, no diplomatic pressure on Israel. What is the true value of recognition without enforcement mechanisms?<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"5509\" data-end=\"5552\">A gesture to appease domestic opinion<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"5553\" data-end=\"5859\">These moves also reflect internal political calculations. Across Europe, municipalities have raised the Palestinian flag, and protests denouncing \u201cgenocide\u201d in Gaza have surged. This raises the question: is recognition aimed at reshaping Middle East politics, or simply at calming public outrage at home?<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"5861\" data-end=\"5903\">A fragmented Palestine, unity absent<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"5904\" data-end=\"6224\">European capitals emphasize the Palestinian Authority as the sole partner, while excluding Hamas entirely. But can a viable state be built on divided and besieged territory? Is the West attempting to create a \u201cmade-to-order\u201d Palestinian state, stripped of resistance, rather than addressing the full political reality?<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"6226\" data-end=\"6251\">Israel doubles down<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"6252\" data-end=\"6552\">Israel\u2019s response was swift and categorical: \u201cThere will be no Palestinian state,\u201d declared Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, while ministers called for annexing the West Bank. Far from pressuring Israel, recognition may actually harden its stance, exposing the limits of purely symbolic gestures.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"6554\" data-end=\"6589\">Europe\u2019s search for relevance<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"6590\" data-end=\"6912\">This initiative also signals Europe\u2019s desire to reassert itself in Middle Eastern diplomacy, after decades of American dominance. Yet the absence of Washington and Tel Aviv at the UN conference underscores the limits of Europe\u2019s influence. Can Europe act independently, or will it remain overshadowed by U.S. veto power?<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"6914\" data-end=\"6954\">Risk of becoming a political alibi<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"6955\" data-end=\"7190\">The danger is that recognition becomes a fa\u00e7ade\u2014an \u201cofficial\u201d state without sovereignty, borders, or resources. Instead of empowering Palestinians, it could legitimize the status quo and allow Israel\u2019s occupation to deepen unchecked.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"7192\" data-end=\"7220\">Steps beyond symbolism<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"7221\" data-end=\"7286\">For recognition to have real impact, it must be accompanied by:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"7287\" data-end=\"7687\">\n<li data-start=\"7287\" data-end=\"7351\">\n<p data-start=\"7289\" data-end=\"7351\"><strong data-start=\"7289\" data-end=\"7320\">Targeted economic sanctions<\/strong> against settlement activity,<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"7352\" data-end=\"7419\">\n<p data-start=\"7354\" data-end=\"7419\"><strong data-start=\"7354\" data-end=\"7386\">Concrete diplomatic pressure<\/strong> such as downgrading relations,<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"7420\" data-end=\"7486\">\n<p data-start=\"7422\" data-end=\"7486\"><strong data-start=\"7422\" data-end=\"7459\">Support for international justice<\/strong> to prosecute war crimes,<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"7487\" data-end=\"7558\">\n<p data-start=\"7489\" data-end=\"7558\"><strong data-start=\"7489\" data-end=\"7528\">Institutional and financial support<\/strong> for Palestinian governance,<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"7559\" data-end=\"7611\">\n<p data-start=\"7561\" data-end=\"7611\"><strong data-start=\"7561\" data-end=\"7608\">Protection and empowerment of civil society<\/strong>,<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"7612\" data-end=\"7687\">\n<p data-start=\"7614\" data-end=\"7687\">and a <strong data-start=\"7620\" data-end=\"7654\">broader multilateral coalition<\/strong> to reassert international law.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"7689\" data-end=\"7705\">Conclusion<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"7706\" data-end=\"8006\">Recognizing Palestine is a necessary first step\u2014but not an endpoint. Without follow-up action, it risks becoming an empty gesture, a symbolic act with no transformative power.
