It is no longer simply a frozen territorial dispute, but a space where political realism, power dynamics, and evolving international positions are being gradually redefined.

Within this framework, the Spanish newspaper “El Confidencial” reported on April 25, 2026, what it described as “notable signals” within the Polisario Front, indicating a gradual shift in political discourse toward greater openness to settlement options beyond the exclusive demand for independence, which has long been the movement’s central position.

According to the same report, this development cannot be separated from a broader diplomatic dynamic characterized by increasing contacts and exchanges between relevant parties, including Morocco, the Polisario Front, Algeria, and Mauritania, through dialogue frameworks held notably in Washington and Madrid. These interactions take place in an international environment where Morocco’s autonomy proposal under Moroccan sovereignty is gaining growing support from several global powers.

The report also cites Mohammed Youslem Beissat, the head of diplomacy of the Polisario Front, who holds what the movement refers to as the position of “Foreign Minister of the self-proclaimed Sahrawi Republic.” He acknowledged that “independence is no longer the only option,” while stressing the need to consider alternative political solutions, provided they are part of a negotiated process that respects the will of the population concerned.

This statement is viewed by some analysts as an indication of a gradual reconfiguration of the movement’s traditional discourse, which has historically been centered on a referendum on self-determination as the sole pathway to independence. However, this evolution remains marked by internal tensions between a more pragmatic current open to political compromise and a more rigid faction still committed to confrontation, driven by the perception of a failed UN-led process since the 1991 ceasefire.

On the ground, testimonies from the Tindouf camps reveal a complex social reality shaped by prolonged waiting and a growing sense of stagnation, particularly among younger generations born into a prolonged refugee situation. This human dimension further deepens the complexity of the issue by adding a social layer to the political debate.

At the same time, the military and technological balance appears to be shifting in favor of Morocco, which has significantly strengthened its defense capabilities in recent years, particularly through the modernization of surveillance systems and advanced technologies. This evolution reduces the scope for military options and reinforces the logic of a political settlement.

In Morocco’s southern provinces, another narrative emerges, grounded in stability and institutional continuity. A significant portion of the local population has chosen to remain integrated within the Moroccan state, reflecting a historical sense of loyalty and socio-political cohesion, contrasting with narratives of absolute rupture often presented in political discourse.

Diplomatically, the issue continues to be discussed within the United Nations Security Council as part of consultations on the mandate of MINURSO. These sessions include briefings by the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General, Staffan de Mistura, as well as UN mission officials, in an effort to revive a political process based on a realistic and sustainable solution.

Thus, between the evolving discourse within the Polisario Front, the consolidation of international support for pragmatic approaches, and the strengthening of Moroccan diplomacy, the issue appears to be entering a quiet phase of reconfiguration, where traditional claims gradually give way to negotiation dynamics and political realism.

In a regional and international context marked by accelerating geopolitical shifts, the Western Sahara issue is once again returning to the forefront of diplomatic attention.
