The Death of Habib Abdelaziz Reopens Tindouf’s Most Explosive File

Have Moroccan Drones Become a Tool for Reshaping the Polisario Leadership? Who Benefits from the Loss of First-Rank Leaders?

The death of a Polisario Front leader east of Morocco’s defensive wall is no longer merely another military incident in the long-running Sahara conflict. When the individual in question is Habib Mohamed Abdelaziz, the event transcends the battlefield and reaches the very core of the separatist movement’s internal balance of power.

He was not an ordinary fighter. He belonged to the new generation of the Polisario’s political and military elite and carried one of the most influential names in the movement’s history. As the son of Mohamed Abdelaziz, who led the Polisario for four decades, he was widely viewed as one of the figures capable of shaping the organization’s future.

For that reason, his death was interpreted by many supporters of the separatist cause not simply as a battlefield loss, but as a political event carrying implications far beyond the military sphere.

The Polisario’s decision to officially announce his death and declare a period of mourning further highlighted his symbolic importance. Such a reaction contrasts with the movement’s more reserved approach to previous losses of military personnel under similar circumstances.

Yet the central question is not how he died. The more important question is why he was there in the first place.

Why would a figure regarded as a potential future leader be sent into an area where the risks are widely known? Why expose a prominent political and military personality to an operation whose outcome appeared increasingly predictable?

Since late 2020, the nature of the conflict has undergone a profound transformation. Morocco’s intervention in Guerguerat and the Polisario’s subsequent declaration that the 1991 ceasefire was no longer valid ushered in a new phase in which technological superiority became the decisive factor on the battlefield.

The rise of drone warfare fundamentally altered the rules of engagement. In previous eras, commanders could rely on mobility, concealment, or surprise. Today, advanced surveillance systems and precision strike capabilities have dramatically reduced those advantages. Any movement in exposed areas can quickly become a target.

Within such a context, the repeated deployment of senior leaders into zones known to be under constant surveillance inevitably raises questions.

Those questions become even more pressing when viewed against the growing list of high-ranking figures who have been killed in similar circumstances over recent years. From Dah El Bendir to other prominent military leaders, several influential figures have disappeared from the Polisario hierarchy. Habib Mohamed Abdelaziz now joins that expanding list.

The recurring pattern has fueled speculation that is increasingly discussed even within circles sympathetic to the separatist cause. Are these simply the unavoidable consequences of an asymmetric conflict, or do they reflect a more discreet process of internal restructuring?

History offers numerous examples of revolutionary and separatist movements facing similar dynamics. As long-running conflicts approach potential political settlements, tensions often emerge between hardliners determined to preserve the original objective at any cost and pragmatists willing to adapt to changing realities.

Within the Polisario, such tensions appear more visible today than at any point in recent years. The international environment has changed significantly. Diplomatic support for Morocco’s position has expanded, the autonomy proposal has gained increased international attention, and the geopolitical conditions that once sustained the conflict have evolved considerably.

At the same time, Algeria faces a complex strategic equation. As the Polisario’s principal political, military, and diplomatic backer, it remains deeply invested in the issue. Yet it is also confronted with growing regional and international pressure favoring a realistic and durable settlement.

Against this backdrop, some observers have begun asking whether certain younger figures within the movement could be perceived as obstacles to any future political compromise.

There is no publicly available evidence proving such a scenario. Nevertheless, the fact that these questions are increasingly being raised among supporters and commentators close to the Tindouf camps reflects a broader atmosphere of uncertainty and mistrust. When supporters begin questioning the strategic choices of their own leadership, the issue extends far beyond military operations.

The debate also concerns the future distribution of power within the movement. Ibrahim Ghali currently leads the Polisario during one of the most delicate periods in its history. The historic generation is gradually approaching the end of its political cycle, while a younger generation struggles to identify a clear path forward.

In such circumstances, every loss carries a political dimension. The death of a rising leader does not merely remove a military commander from the field; it also alters the balance of potential succession and future influence within the organization.

At a broader level, these developments illustrate the transformation of modern warfare itself. Morocco is not only maintaining military superiority on the ground; it is progressively shaping a strategic environment in which the Polisario finds it increasingly difficult to preserve its leadership structure and renew its political elite.

Yet beyond military calculations, a deeper question remains unresolved.

The real mystery may not be how Habib Mohamed Abdelaziz died, but why he was placed in that position. Wars do not merely reveal the effectiveness of weapons; they also expose the decisions that place individuals in the path of danger.

As drones continue to redefine the balance of power in the Sahara conflict, a larger question emerges: Is the Polisario losing its leaders solely because of Morocco’s growing military and technological advantage, or do some of these losses reflect a silent struggle over the movement’s future at a moment when the prospect of a political settlement appears closer than ever?

The answer to that question may determine not only the future of the Polisario Front, but also the ultimate outcome of one of Africa’s longest-running conflicts.

Have Moroccan Drones Become a Tool for Reshaping the Polisario Leadership?
