<\/p>\nOn the heights of Amman\u2019s ancient Citadel, where layers of history seem to meet in a single landscape, the curtain fell on the seventh edition of the Amman International Film Festival \u2013 Awal Film.<\/p>\n
Yet among the many films that arrived from different countries and cinematic traditions, Morocco\u2019s presence was not merely another participation in an international competition.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
It had a name.<\/p>\n
\u201cA\u00efcha,\u201d directed by Sanae Alaoui, winner of the Jury Prize in the Arab Short Film Competition.<\/strong><\/p>\n The award is, of course, a moment to celebrate.<\/p>\n But its real significance goes beyond the trophy.<\/p>\n The more important question is not simply:<\/p>\n Why did \u201cA\u00efcha\u201d win?<\/strong><\/p>\n It is:<\/p>\n What did the jury see in this short film that made it stand out among the works in competition?<\/strong><\/p>\n That is where another reading of the film begins.<\/p>\n The seventh edition of the Amman festival was held under the theme \u201cBeyond the Frame,\u201d<\/strong> with a declared ambition to celebrate films that move beyond the boundaries of the screen and continue to provoke thought after the credits have rolled.<\/p>\n In that context, \u201cA\u00efcha\u201d seems almost naturally connected to the spirit of the festival.<\/p>\n Because the film does not merely tell a story.<\/p>\n It searches for what lies behind the story<\/strong>.<\/p>\n On the surface, \u201cA\u00efcha\u201d tells an intimate story: a seventeen-year-old girl and a mother whose relationship is marked by emotional distance. sentences.<\/p>\n But that apparent simplicity is precisely where much of its strength lies.<\/p>\n Sanae Alaoui does not turn suffering into a speech.<\/p>\n She does not tell the audience what to feel.<\/p>\n She does not provide ready-made moral answers.<\/p>\n Instead, she gives space to silence, to looks, to images and to everything that remains unspoken.<\/p>\n And that choice changes the meaning of the story.<\/p>\n Because when the director establishes an emotional distance between mother and daughter, she is not only talking about the separation that follows tragedy.<\/p>\n She is slogan.<\/p>\n The daughter is not reduced to the role of a victim.<\/p>\n The mother is not simply presented as the guilty party.<\/p>\n And spirituality is not used merely as a folkloric backdrop.<\/p>\n Each element belongs to a larger emotional structure in which love can coexist with harshness, silence with the desire to speak, and guilt with the desperate search for redemption.<\/p>\n This allows the film to move beyond a simple story about a mother and daughter.<\/p>\n \u201cA\u00efcha\u201d enters a much more universal territory:<\/p>\n the territory of relationships that do not necessarily break in a single moment, but slowly erode beneath the weight of silence.<\/strong><\/p>\n The tragedy then becomes more than an event.<\/p>\n It becomes the moment when everything that had remained unsaid finally reveals itself.<\/p>\n The film\u2019s use of spiritual and popular cultural elements is equally significant.<\/p>\n In many productions, heritage can easily become a visual showcase: recognizable rituals, familiar gestures and carefully selected images intended simply to announce cultural identity.<\/p>\n \u201cA\u00efcha\u201d appears to take a different path.<\/p>\n The spiritual dimension is not there merely to display a culture.<\/p>\n It becomes part of the characters\u2019 inner world.<\/p>\n It becomes a way of searching for meaning when reality itself offers none.<\/p>\n This is where spirituality and cinema meet.<\/p>\n Not as two separate worlds, but as two ways of confronting absence.<\/p>\n Heritage therefore stops being decoration.<\/p>\n It becomes an inner language.<\/p>\n The Jury Prize might, at first glance, appear to be simply another distinction.<\/p>\n That would underestimate its meaning.<\/p>\n A jury award reflects the collective judgment of filmmakers, critics or professionals who have seen the competing works and chosen to stop at one particular film because of its artistic value, originality, writing or emotional force.<\/p>\n In the case of \u201cA\u00efcha,\u201d the distinction matters even more because it does not appear to be an isolated event.<\/p>\n The film has already begun to build its own journey through different cinematic spaces.<\/p>\n It has received recognition at other festivals, including the National Film Festival in Tangier and the Luxor African Film Festival.<\/p>\n The new distinction in Amman therefore looks less like an endpoint than another stage.<\/p>\n And in the life of a film, the journey often matters more than the trophy.<\/strong><\/p>\n A prize can be a fortunate encounter with a particular jury.<\/p>\n A series of recognitions in different contexts begins to reveal something else:<\/p>\n a trajectory.<\/p>\n There is another important dimension here.<\/p>\n \u201cA\u00efcha\u201d does not appear to be seeking universality by erasing what makes it Moroccan.<\/p>\n Quite the opposite.<\/p>\n The film begins with an intensely local and intimate experience, then transforms it into an emotional reality that a viewer in Amman, Cairo, Tangier or elsewhere can recognize.<\/p>\n This is one of cinema\u2019s most difficult equations:<\/p>\n How can a film remain deeply local without becoming closed, and universal without losing its roots?<\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cA\u00efcha\u201d seems to find its answer in that balance.<\/p>\n Grief is not Moroccan.<\/p>\n Regret is not Moroccan.<\/p>\n The complexity of the relationship between a mother and daughter is not Moroccan either.<\/p>\n But the way these emotions are expressed, the cultural space in which they unfold, and the spiritual sensibility running through the narrative give the film its Moroccan identity.<\/p>\n That is precisely what allows it to travel.<\/p>\n Sanae Alaoui\u2019s own approach deserves attention.<\/p>\n \u201cA\u00efcha\u201d does not feel like a simple first exercise by a young filmmaker trying to prove that she can make a film.<\/p>\n The film itself does the proving.<\/p>\n It reveals a sensibility.<\/p>\n It reveals a way of looking at characters, using silence and allowing images to carry what dialogue cannot always express.<\/p>\n That is important.<\/p>\n Because a first film does not have to be perfect to be revealing.<\/p>\n It has to make a voice recognizable.<\/p>\n And \u201cA\u00efcha\u201d already allows that voice to emerge: a cinematic language more interested in inner wounds than spectacle, more concerned with what remains after an event than with the event itself.<\/p>\n But reducing this achievement to Sanae Alaoui alone would also mean missing a broader development.<\/p>\n What is happening around \u201cA\u00efcha\u201d says something about a new generation of Moroccan filmmakers.<\/p>\n A generation exploring different narrative territories, willing to address silence, intimate wounds, family relationships, social contradictions and emotional spaces that conventional cinema sometimes leaves in the shadows.<\/p>\n For this generation, the short film is no longer necessarily a preliminary step toward the feature film.<\/p>\n It can be an artistic form in its own right.<\/p>\n A laboratory.<\/p>\n A place to experiment with language, aesthetics, rhythm and, above all, with vision.<\/p>\n This is where festivals become more than places where awards are handed out.<\/p>\n They become spaces where emerging voices encounter other cultures, other audiences and other ways of looking.<\/p>\n There is a particularly striking coincidence here.<\/p>\n The seventh edition of the Amman International Film Festival chose \u201cBeyond the Frame\u201d<\/strong> as its central theme.<\/p>\n Yet \u201cA\u00efcha\u201d is, in essence, a film about what cannot entirely be seen within the frame.<\/p>\n There are words that were never spoken.<\/p>\n Feelings that never found their expression.<\/p>\n A past that continues to exist after absence.<\/p>\n A pain searching for a form.<\/p>\n And a memory that the camera cannot capture directly, but can make us feel.<\/p>\n This is where cinema stops being merely a representation of reality.<\/p>\n It becomes an attempt to understand what lies behind reality.<\/p>\n And perhaps that is what it truly means to go beyond the frame.<\/p>\n The Amman award deserves to be celebrated, but it should not become merely another entry in a list of prizes.<\/p>\n Its real importance lies in what it says.<\/p>\n It tells Sanae Alaoui that her vision can resonate beyond the space in which it was created.<\/p>\n It tells Moroccan cinema that the short film can carry a complete artistic ambition.<\/p>\n It tells Arab festivals that Moroccan cinema is producing new voices with stories worth hearing\u2014not only through major productions and established names, but through filmmakers who are still emerging and who are willing to place intimate questions at the centre of their work.<\/p>\n And it tells the audience something as well.<\/p>\n That a film which does not shout can sometimes hurt more deeply than one that does.<\/p>\n That a story lasting only a few minutes can leave behind a question that lasts much longer than its running time.<\/p>\n In the end, \u201cA\u00efcha\u201d was not simply one of the short films screened in Amman.<\/p>\n It entered an Arab competition and emerged with the Jury Prize.<\/p>\n But more importantly, it demonstrated that a story rooted in a deeply specific experience can cross borders without surrendering its identity.<\/p>\n Perhaps that is Sanae Alaoui\u2019s real achievement.<\/p>\n She did not try to make noise.<\/p>\n She chose to make silence speak<\/strong>.<\/p>\n And that distinction matters.<\/p>\n \u201cA\u00efcha\u201d is a film about a girl who disappears, a mother left facing absence, and a relationship that may never have had enough time to say everything it needed to say.<\/p>\n Sanae Alaoui gave that pain a frame.<\/p>\n Then she invited us to look beyond it.<\/p>\n Beyond the image.
