The economic relationship between Morocco and Spain can no longer be measured simply by what trucks and ships carry across the Strait of Gibraltar. The figure of more than \u20ac20 billion in bilateral trade conceals something deeper: Spanish factories depend on components produced in Morocco, Moroccan companies are integrated into European production chains, and Spanish investments have found in the Kingdom a production base closer to Europe than many Asian alternatives.<\/p>\n
That is the point highlighted by the Spanish newspaper El Espa\u00f1ol<\/em> in an extensive article examining Morocco\u2019s growing weight in the Spanish economy. The newspaper no longer presents the Kingdom simply as a neighboring market for Spanish exports, but as a link in a production network whose dismantling would carry costs for both sides.<\/p>\n During the first half of the year, Spanish exports to Morocco reached approximately \u20ac6.42 billion, while imports from the Kingdom stood at around \u20ac5.8 billion. The figures illustrate the scale of trade. On their own, however, they do not explain why Morocco has become so important to the Spanish economy.<\/p>\n The answer becomes clearer when the figures move from the ports into the factories.<\/p>\n More than 350 Spanish companies operate in Morocco across sectors ranging from automobiles and energy to infrastructure, banking and technology. Some of these investments no longer treat Morocco simply as a local market, but as part of an industrial system directly connected to the European market.<\/p>\n The automotive sector illustrates this transformation more clearly than almost any other.<\/p>\n Over the past few years, Morocco has built a significant automotive industrial base, with major manufacturing plants and a broad network of suppliers. For European companies, the attraction is not limited to production costs. Geography plays a decisive role: Moroccan industrial sites are only a few hours from European production centers by sea or land, while Asian supply chains involve longer distances, more time and different logistics costs.<\/p>\n In this equation, geographical proximity itself becomes an economic asset.<\/p>\n Textiles provide another example of the relationship that has developed between Spanish companies and Moroccan production. Part of the industrial activity that might otherwise be linked to distant production zones can be based in Morocco, allowing companies to respond more quickly to the European market.<\/p>\n That is why a political crisis between Madrid and Rabat would have a different economic dimension from an ordinary dispute between two countries with limited commercial ties.<\/p>\n If trade relations were disrupted, it would not simply be a matter of finding another country capable of supplying the same products. Companies would have to reorganize suppliers, redesign transport networks, modify contracts and potentially investments, and in some cases maintain larger inventories to absorb delays. In industries where components have to arrive according to precise schedules, even a relatively limited logistical problem can become a real production cost.<\/p>\n El Espa\u00f1ol<\/em> focuses on precisely this possibility, warning that any transfer of political tensions into the economic sphere would carry a cost for both countries.<\/p>\n That does not mean Spain has become \u201cdependent\u201d on Morocco for its economy as a whole. The available data do not support such a broad conclusion. What they do show more clearly is growing interdependence in specific sectors and production chains, making companies that built their investments around stable bilateral relations more sensitive to political disruption.<\/p>\n Morocco itself no longer occupies the same position it did several years ago.<\/p>\n Industrial investment, particularly in automobiles, energy and infrastructure, has gradually placed the Kingdom in a different position on the regional economic map. Morocco\u2019s attractiveness is no longer based solely on its proximity to the European market. It combines geography, infrastructure, ports, labor, trade agreements and the ability to connect Moroccan production with European and African markets.<\/p>\n The relationship with Spain is therefore moving in both directions.<\/p>\n Madrid has an interest in maintaining access to the Moroccan market and to a nearby production base, while the Moroccan economy benefits from investment, expertise and access to European markets. As these interests become more intertwined, the cost of a rupture becomes more visible, even when rupture is not being considered as a political option.<\/p>\n The economic question is no longer simply the value of what Spain sells to Morocco or buys from it. It lies inside the product itself: where were its components made? Where did its raw materials come from? How many times did they cross the border before reaching the European consumer?<\/p>\n At that point, the Strait of Gibraltar looks less like a dividing line between two economies and more like a corridor within a single production system whose different stages are distributed across both shores.<\/p>\n That is what gives the figures cited by El Espa\u00f1ol<\/em> a significance beyond an annual trade balance. More than \u20ac20 billion in trade, hundreds of Spanish companies operating in Morocco, and investments linked to strategic industrial sectors point to an economic relationship that exists independently of political rhetoric.<\/p>\n This does not mean economic interests prevent political disputes or make them impossible. The history of relations between states shows otherwise. But they make the cost of certain choices more tangible once politics reaches factories, ports and supply chains.<\/p>\n For Spain, Morocco is no longer simply the southern neighbor with which trade is growing. For Morocco, Spain is no longer merely a nearby gateway to Europe. Between the two countries, a network of interests has developed in which businesses became part of the relationship before politics began to define it or redirect it.<\/p>\n And dismantling such a network does not necessarily begin with a political decision and end there.
