Beyond its artistic appeal and the presence of prominent figures from world cinema, this year’s edition points to an increasingly defined ambition: to establish the Festival not only as a cultural showcase, but also as a platform connecting artistic visibility, project development and professional cooperation within the international film industry.

The appointment of French actress Marion Cotillard as president of the jury is among the most prominent announcements of this edition. Her presence reflects the Festival’s ability to attract internationally recognised figures and strengthen its position within the global film landscape. Yet the significance of this appointment goes beyond the symbolic value of a celebrated name. The jury will also be responsible for assessing the films competing in the official selection and awarding this year’s prizes, bringing together different cinematic sensibilities, experiences and approaches.

Alongside this artistic dimension, attention is turning to the Atlas Workshops, whose ninth edition will take place in Marrakech from 22 to 26 November under the presidency of Brazilian filmmaker Kleber Mendonça Filho. His appointment takes on particular significance when considered in light of the Workshops’ mission: supporting film projects at different stages of development and production while connecting their creators with expertise, professional networks and opportunities within the international film industry.

The figures announced offer an indication of the scale and geographical reach of the initiative. Thirty projects and films from 14 countries have been selected from 410 applications. The selection comprises 14 projects in development, 11 films in production or post-production, and five Moroccan projects presented within the «Atlas Close-Ups» section. These figures represent more than a selection process. They also illustrate the growing importance of professional platforms capable of helping projects move from initial conception towards production, completion and distribution.

The Moroccan dimension is particularly evident through the «Atlas Station» programme, which has selected eight Moroccan professionals to participate in a development and training programme, including meetings with international experts. This initiative is complemented by support for five Moroccan short films currently in post-production, with particular attention given to final editing and distribution.

The significance of these programmes extends beyond the number of participants. It raises a broader issue concerning the position of Moroccan talent within the film industry and its ability to turn production experience into sustainable professional opportunities. Talent and the capacity to produce are not, by themselves, sufficient to guarantee a project’s continuity or its access to international markets. The stages that follow production, particularly artistic completion, securing distributors and gaining access to professional networks, remain decisive for the future of a film. From this perspective, supporting Moroccan projects and short films represents an attempt to address part of the gap between domestic production and the conditions required for films to circulate beyond national borders.

The professional meetings dedicated to film distribution, expected to bring together around 60 industry professionals from Africa, the Arab world and Europe, add another strategic dimension to the Atlas Workshops. Distribution remains one of the major challenges facing many film productions, particularly independent works that often lack sufficiently developed networks to secure promotion and access to audiences. A film’s journey does not end when shooting is completed or when it receives its first screening. Its ability to reach distributors, festivals, platforms and, ultimately, audiences also determines its longevity and wider impact.

Taken together, these initiatives point to a gradual evolution in the role of the Festival. It is moving beyond the traditional function of celebrating cinema and welcoming its leading figures towards a more active role in parts of the film industry’s ecosystem. Through training, project development and the creation of professional connections between filmmakers, producers and international networks, the Festival is seeking to contribute to the conditions in which films are made, completed and distributed.

This direction is particularly relevant to Moroccan and African cinema, which needs broader opportunities to integrate into international production, distribution and marketing networks, rather than relying solely on visibility at film festivals.

The actual value of this ambition, however, will depend on what these programmes deliver beyond the Festival’s scheduled dates. Training sessions, professional meetings and project selections must ultimately translate into completed films, professional agreements and tangible distribution opportunities. International recognition gives Marrakech an important position, but sustaining that position requires its visibility to contribute to the development of the film industry itself, while enabling Moroccan talent to move from the festival showcase into the wider production and distribution market.

Between Marion Cotillard’s appointment as jury president, Kleber Mendonça Filho’s leadership of the Atlas Workshops and the expansion of programmes supporting Moroccan projects, the November 2026 edition offers another opportunity to assess the Festival’s ability to bring together two complementary ambitions: attracting the international film community to the Red City while giving Moroccan and African cinema stronger tools to reach the world.

Marrakech is preparing to host the 23rd edition of its International Film Festival from 20 to 28 November 2026.
