{"id":620,"date":"2023-03-01T19:45:36","date_gmt":"2023-03-01T19:45:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/diplomatique.ma\/en\/?p=620"},"modified":"2023-03-02T08:47:36","modified_gmt":"2023-03-02T08:47:36","slug":"tunisia-calls-for-arab-support-amid-tension-over-irregular-migration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/diplomatique.ma\/en\/tunisia-calls-for-arab-support-amid-tension-over-irregular-migration\/","title":{"rendered":"Tunisia calls for Arab support amid tension over irregular migration"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"selectionShareable\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Tunisia, on Wednesday, called for Arab support amid tension with the African Union (AU) over the flow of irregular migrants into the North African country,\u00a0<i>Anadolu News Agency\u00a0<\/i>reports.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Speaking at a meeting of Arab interior ministers in Tunis, Interior Minister, Taoufik Charafeddine, said Tunisia looks for Arab support amid &#8220;an unprecedented and unjustified attack&#8221; against the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Tension escalated between Tunisia and the AU Commission last week after Tunisian President, Kais Saied, called for ending the flow of migrants from sub-Saharan Africa into his country, saying irregular migration aims to change Tunisia&#8217;s demography.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Chairperson of the AU Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, termed the Tunisian President&#8217;s comments as &#8220;shocking&#8221; and called on Tunisia to treat migrants with dignity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">For years, North African countries such as Tunisia, Algeria, Libya, Mauritania and Morocco have witnessed attempts by migrants \u2013 mainly from sub-Saharan Africa \u2013 to reach Europe, hoping for a better life.
