{"id":632,"date":"2023-03-05T15:12:17","date_gmt":"2023-03-05T15:12:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/diplomatique.ma\/en\/?p=632"},"modified":"2023-03-06T15:17:48","modified_gmt":"2023-03-06T15:17:48","slug":"iraqs-prime-minister-visits-egypt-to-bolster-ties","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/diplomatique.ma\/en\/iraqs-prime-minister-visits-egypt-to-bolster-ties\/","title":{"rendered":"Iraq&#8217;s prime minister visits Egypt to bolster ties"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"selectionShareable\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">CAIRO \u2014 Egypt\u2019s President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi held talks Sunday with Iraq\u2019s prime minister in Cairo as the two countries seek to deepen ties and reinforce a regional alliance with Jordan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani arrived in Cairo on Sunday for his first visit to Egypt, as part of efforts to enhance relations between the two countries, reports\u00a0<em>Anadolu Agency<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Al-Sudani held a meeting with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi following his arrival, a presidential statement said, without providing any further details about the content of their talks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Al-Sudani&#8217;s office said the discussions between the two sides dwelt on ways to strengthen bilateral relations and issues of mutual concern.<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\">The trip marked al-Sudani\u2019s first to Cairo since his Cabinet was approved by the Iraqi parliament in October, ending a yearlong political stalemate. Al-Sudani\u2019s predecessor, former Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi, had forged a close relationship with el-Sissi and King Abdullah II of Jordan.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\" data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\">El-Sissi traveled to Baghdad in June 2021, becoming the first Egyptian head of state to visit Iraq since the 1990s, when ties between the two countries were severed after Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-qa=\"article-body\">Egypt, Iraq and Jordan have intensified their ties, with their leaders holding five summits since 2019, most recently at the Dead Sea in Jordan in December to discuss implementing strategic projects. Those include building gas pipelines between Iraq and Egypt through Jordan, and an industrial city on the Iraq-Jordan border, Egypt\u2019s state-run Al-Ahram daily reported Sunday.<\/div>\n<div data-qa=\"article-body\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\">Al-Kadhimi has also sought to strengthen his country\u2019s standing in the Middle East as a mediator capable of bringing even the staunchest of foes to the negotiating table.
