{"id":922,"date":"2023-06-15T22:19:32","date_gmt":"2023-06-15T22:19:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/diplomatique.ma\/en\/?p=922"},"modified":"2023-06-16T03:28:14","modified_gmt":"2023-06-16T03:28:14","slug":"iraq-pm-to-remove-shia-militias-camps-from-cities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/diplomatique.ma\/en\/iraq-pm-to-remove-shia-militias-camps-from-cities\/","title":{"rendered":"Iraq PM to remove Shia militia&#8217;s camps from cities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"selectionShareable\" dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Iraqi government intends to launch a plan to remove camps belonging to the People&#8217;s Mobilisation Forces (PMF) from cities following several demands made by parliamentarians representing the Sunni provinces.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\" dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Prime Minister Muhammad Shayya Al-Sudani announced yesterday that his government is working to establish special camps for PMF militias outside cities, and to develop a law that &#8220;guarantees a dignified retirement for its members&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\" dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Al-Sudani said, during an annual ceremony marking the ninth anniversary of the militia&#8217;s establishment, that the security challenges that have previously faced Iraq are now part of the past thanks to the vigilance of the security forces, adding that the PMF&#8217;s role included supporting the army to preserve state institutions and the political system in the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\" dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">He explained that the PMF now enjoys full legitimacy based on the constitution, and is subject to the supervision of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, like the rest of the security services.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\" dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;The government is working to establish camps, headquarters and bases for the PMF outside the cities, in order to achieve the combat goal for which it was established,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\" dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The PMF was formed in 2014, to combat Daesh which seized major areas in Iraq.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\" dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">After expelling the group from Iraq, the parliament recognised the PMF as &#8220;an auxiliary force for the Iraqi security forces which has the right to preserve its identity and privacy, as long as this does not pose a threat to national security.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\" dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">However, the Sunni governorates in Iraq and their deputies in parliament have repeatedly demanded PMF be removed from cities, having previously said they\u00a0&#8220;operated with impunity&#8221;, killed Sunnis and forced some to sell prime properties near Shia shrines.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"eiRdjlG0Ky\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/diplomatique.ma\/en\/2023\/06\/15\/ex-aide-to-tunisia-president-accuses-him-of-spying-on-army\/\">Ex-aide to Tunisia president accuses him of spying on army<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; and said that his government &#8220;has started building camps for the factions outside the cities, and they will be transferred after the completion of their construction,&#8221; according to the sources.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Sovereignty Alliance said they would create a follow-up committee to oversee the government\u2019s implementation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">It was not clear what purpose the military camps would serve, and whether or not any of these armed groups would be completely dismantled.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">One of the strongest armed groups\u00a0in Iraq is the Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF), or Hashd al-Shaabi, an\u00a0Iran-backed\u00a0Shia paramilitary umbrella organisation.
