A commander in Iran’s Revolutionary Guard threatens to close the Strait of Hormuz; analysts consider this a pressure tactic against the US administration

The threats by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard to close the Strait of Hormuz have topped the headlines in international and Arab newspapers, in a clear indication of escalating tensions between Tehran and Washington amid a sensitive round of nuclear negotiations coinciding with a military buildup in the Persian Gulf region.

According to Bahrain’s Al Bilad newspaper, the commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard’s naval forces, Ali Reza Tangsiri, confirmed that the forces are ready to take control of the Strait of Hormuz or close it “as soon as possible” if the higher orders are issued, in a direct threat that could change the rules of the game in the region.

These statements coincided with the conclusion of military exercises called “Smart Control of the Strait of Hormuz,” which began two days ago under the supervision of the Revolutionary Guard Command, in what appears to be a practical preparation for possible confrontation scenarios.

At the same time, Iran issued navigational warnings and closed parts of its airspace to conduct missile drills on Thursday, further escalating the military messages emanating from Tehran, according to Al Jazeera Net.

Strategic background

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most important waterways, with approximately 20% of the world’s seaborne oil exports passing through it, in addition to gas shipments and international trade. Therefore, any threat of its closure—even partial or temporary—carries far-reaching economic and political consequences.

The Iranian threat comes at a time of increasing tension in relations between Tehran and Washington, amid a round of indirect negotiations in Geneva over Iran’s nuclear program and an attempt to break the diplomatic deadlock.

Interpretations and analyses

According to Western press reports, Iran’s military movements in the Strait of Hormuz are also related to preparations in anticipation of any possible American military action, amid reports of a review of military options by the Washington administration.

The ndtv website stated that analysts indicate that the threat to close the strait may not necessarily be an immediate executive action, but it serves as a strategic pressure tactic in the face of American pressure and sanctions, and may be part of a multifaceted “deterrence message”.

Immediate economic impacts

The threats were quickly reflected in financial markets, with oil prices rising to levels close to their highest in recent months as investors priced in potential geopolitical risks and supply impacts.

Reading amidst a tense atmosphere

The current tension in the Strait of Hormuz reflects a mix of military and diplomatic dynamics: on the one hand, military preparations and troop buildups in the Gulf; on the other, Tehran’s attempt to use its strategic leverage to pressure Washington in the context of nuclear negotiations. In any case, the Strait of Hormuz remains a dangerous flashpoint that could ignite a wider crisis if the parties lose control of the situation.
