Among Them Minors… Hundreds of Moroccans Attempt to Swim into Ceuta in the Fog: Government Failure to Protect Young Lives

Scenes of irregular migration attempts by young Moroccans to the occupied city of Ceuta continue, with hundreds of them, including minors, taking advantage of the dense fog enveloping the area to swim around the Tarajal barrier in a desperate attempt to reach the European shore.

In the early hours of Friday morning, the region witnessed hundreds of Moroccans jumping into the sea, trying to bypass the Tarajal wave barrier despite the enormous risks. In response, the Spanish Civil Guard and Moroccan security forces intensified their efforts to prevent these attempts, deploying significant reinforcements on both sides to monitor the maritime and land borders.

Reports of missing migrants are increasing, along with the retrieval of bodies from the sea after some young people failed to reach the occupied enclave. What worsens the tragedy is the fact that many of these migrants were utterly exhausted, making them vulnerable to drowning or being picked up by coastal patrols after hours of struggling against the waves.

While many adult migrants were handed over to Moroccan authorities after being rescued from the sea, the centers for the protection of minors in Ceuta are severely overcrowded due to the continuous influx of minors from Morocco. Human rights advocates are raising concerns about the increasing number of migration attempts among young Moroccans, particularly in the northern regions, where these youths swim long distances, sometimes up to 15 hours, with all the associated risks to their lives.

This phenomenon, which is escalating at an alarming rate, puts the Moroccan government in a difficult position, revealing its failure to protect these young people who are driven by despair and socio-economic hardship to risk their lives. A government that seems unable to provide effective solutions to improve living conditions and offer job opportunities is directly contributing to the worsening of this humanitarian crisis.

The persistence of these tragic scenes reflects the government’s disregard for the lives of thousands of Moroccan children and youths who see fleeing to Europe as their last resort to escape their harsh reality. Instead of addressing the root causes of this phenomenon, the authorities are merely implementing security measures that further complicate the situation without offering real solutions to improve the conditions driving these young people to risk their lives.

Addressing this crisis requires comprehensive efforts that include improving the socio-economic conditions in marginalized areas and providing real alternatives for the youth, to discourage them from risking their lives in search of a better future on the other shore.
