Egypt begins its one-month presidency of the African Union Peace and Security Council

The presidency of the Arab Republic of Egypt of the African Union Peace and Security Council began on the first of February 2026, for a period of one month.

According to the Egyptian State Information Service’s Facebook page, quoting the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ page on the same site, the Egyptian presidency comes at a critical time when security, political and developmental challenges are increasing in the African continent, and there are complex regional and international circumstances that require cooperation and concerted efforts to confront these challenges.

Important political, security, and development issues

The Egyptian presidency is scheduled to address several important issues in the political, security, development, and environmental fields.

The Egyptian presidency aims to enhance the effectiveness of the Peace and Security Council as the main body concerned with maintaining stability and establishing security in the African continent through a comprehensive approach aimed at developing the peace, security and governance architecture in Africa, in a way that contributes to settling conflicts, supporting security and stability and achieving the goals of the African Union’s Agenda 2063 for development.

The Egyptian Presidency of the Peace and Security Council will be keen to embody the constants and established principles in the Constitutive Charter of the African Union, which are based on respect for the sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity of states, the preservation of their national institutions, non-interference in internal affairs, and the promotion of multilateral action within the framework of the African Union, in a way that contributes to establishing stability and security and achieving development.

Organizing intensive events

The Egyptian presidency of the Council is scheduled to witness intensive activities addressing developments in Sudan and Somalia, where informal consultations will be held at the ministerial level of the Council with the Sudanese Foreign Minister, followed by two ministerial sessions to discuss developments in Sudan and Somalia, In addition to adopting the annual report on the activities of the Peace and Security Council, which is scheduled to be presented by the Egyptian delegation participating in the African Union Heads of State and Government Summit.

The Egyptian presidency program includes holding council sessions on the issue of climate, peace and security, the post-conflict reconstruction and development file which Egypt is leading, and artificial intelligence, governance, peace and security, In addition to holding consultations with a number of specialized agencies to discuss the link between food, peace and security, and to address the challenges of political transition in African countries, there are a number of events, consultations and field visits that the Egyptian Presidency continues to coordinate with the concerned parties.
